‘No backtracking over eco towns’ claims department

Ministers are sticking to plans to build 10 ‘eco towns’, despite growing concerns over the viability of some shortlisted projects.

The Department for Communities and Local Government has also confirmed that it has delayed publication of its final shortlist for eco towns until 2009.

The list was due to be made public in October, but concerns over at least four of the 16 potential projects have forced the Government into a new round of consultations.

The Government’s commitment to building 10 sites appears to contradict housing minister Caroline Flint’s recent assertion that ‘there are no done deals and only the best-quality schemes will qualify for eco town status’.

But a CLG spokesman told Surveyor: ‘We have no intention of reducing the number of towns we plan, which still stands at 10.’
