London’s Night Tube service is set to be launched in August, according to driver’s union ASLEF.
The union said Transport for London (TfL) has drawn up plans to roll out the new all-night London Underground service ‘line by line’.
It said passengers on the Victoria and Jubilee lines will be able to travel through the night on Fridays and Saturdays from August, with the service rolled out to Central, Northern and Piccadilly line passengers in September.
But TfL has disputed the claim. A spokesperson, said: ‘No date has yet been agreed for the launch of the Night Tube, but we are working hard to deliver it for London as quickly as possible.’
London Underground trains are set to run through the night
ASLEF said at least 200 new part-time drivers will be needed to operate the service and that its agreement with TfL means new recruits are now being trained and will be ready for duty in time for its launch.
The union added that this has led to a big surge in membership.
Finn Brennan, ASLEF’s organiser on London Underground said: ‘We were always clear that we were in favour of Night Tube. A world-class capital city such as London deserves a world-class public transport system.
‘We are really pleased that passengers will be able to enjoy an all-night service from August, operated under agreements that have improved conditions for existing drivers and created hundreds of new jobs, and new ASLEF members.’
