New trams expected to ‘transform’ Greater Manchester Metrolink

Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority is investing £17M in eight new trams for the Metrolink network.
The trams will be built by Canadian transport company, Bombardier. Similar trams are already in operation in several European cities, including Cologne, Bonn, Rotterdam and Stockholm.
The new FLEXITY Swift trams (pictured in operation in Cologne) are due to be introduced on the Metrolink system in 2009 as part of a £100M scheme to improve the existing network. Twenty miles of worn-out track on the Bury and Altrincham lines is being replaced this summer.
Cllr Roger Jones, chair of GMPTA, said: ‘This new model of tram will help transform Metrolink. We expect to order at least 28 more in the near future for the first phase of the Metrolink expansion.’
The new trams will be 28.4m long and 2.85m wide. Up to 200 passengers will be able to travel on each tram, and wide double-doors will make it easier for people with wheelchairs or baby buggies to get on and off.
