New buses will leave local travellers doubled up

Double-decker buses will soon become a familiar site in rural areas of Northern Ireland, according to minister for regional development, Conor Murphy.

A fleet of 80 new double-deck buses were recently purchased for Ulsterbus, which will come into service in rural areas soon. Murphy praised Translink’s initiative in buying more seat-belted vehicles for the rural fleet.

‘Between the school transport buses and these new double-decks launched today, some 15,000 belted seats have been introduced into the rural fleet,’ he said. Murphy also announced a £316M roads investment when awarding a contract to complete the dualling of the Belfast to Dublin road, and improve accessibility to the west.

The contract was awarded to Amey Lagan Roads Limited for the Roads Service Design Build Finance Operate (DBFO) – Package 2 contract.
