New body to look at councils' approach to climate change

The Local Government Association has launched a new independent body to investigate local authorities’ approach to tackling climate change.
The Independent Climate Change Commission aims to review and critically evaluate local government’s track record on climate change.
It will look at the ways in which councils throughout the UK can reduce carbon emissions in their own buildings and facilities, and the decisions they make for the services they provide, such as transport.
The seven commission members will consider major challenges, including reducing energy use, trying to encourage the wider use of renewable energy sources and planning for extreme weather.
‘Councils have a huge role to play. The work of the commission will investigate how authorities can do more to advise, support and help local people to make these essential changes,’ said commission chairman, Prof John Chesshire.
