New CIHT president Markides promises 'holistic approach'

Working alongside other professions in ‘creating better places’ will be a key theme for Andreas Markides, the new president of the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation (CIHT).

Mr Markides, who was elected this month, is experienced in the planning, design and management of major development projects, urban extensions and town centre regeneration schemes and has been involved in the design and supervision of infrastructure works.

The theme for his year is ‘Creating Better Places’, which the CIHT said supports its vision of ‘World-class transportation infrastructure and services’.

Mr Markides said: ‘It is an honour to become president of CIHT and I hope to show that we are the institution of choice for all those who work in transport infrastructure. Throughout my professional life, I have had the benefit of working alongside planners, urban designers and economists as well as colleagues from more traditional transportation specialisms.

‘This holistic approach to problem solving is an advantage of interacting with the cross-sector of professionals who are members of CIHT.

‘I will be working with CIHT colleagues to highlight the importance of creating better places. There are many examples of good place making in large cities but there is no reason that cannot be replicated elsewhere.’

He added: ‘I believe that if we can build places where people feel happy and proud of, they become more civilised and this leads to economic regeneration.’

Mr Markides has been a CIHT Trustee for the last three years and is on the Transport Panel of the Institution of Civil Engineers.

In 2014 he acted as Planning Commissioner for the island of Cyprus, where he was born. He came to England in 1976 to do his A’ Levels and has lived in England since.
