Network Rail awards £750m signalling contracts

Network Rail has awarded six major signalling and telecoms (S and T) framework contracts across the country, totalling £750m for Control Period 6 (2019-2024).

The S and T frameworks, which are split into six geographical lots, have been awarded to:

  • Lot 1 London North West – VolkerRail Special Businesses Ltd £175m (£150m - £250m)
  • Lot 2 Anglia, South East and Wessex – Atkins Ltd £175m (£150m - £250m)
  • Lot 3 London North East – Linbrooke Services Ltd £125m (£100m - £200m)
  • Lot 4 Scotland – Babcock Rail Ltd £150m (£100m - £200m)
  • Lot 5 Western – Colas Rail Ltd £75m (£50m - £125m)
  • Lot 6 Wales – Siemens Mobility Ltd £50m (£25m - £100m)

The frameworks will deliver a range of projects including stand-alone level crossings, stand-alone major telecoms and related civils works.

Martin Robinson, commercial director, signalling said: 'The S and T framework awards are the first awards in a three-tier approach to signalling delivery for CP6 which aims to recognise the differing signalling work banks we have to deliver. The awards have gone to signalling suppliers that between them, have many years of signalling experience on our railway and will help Network Rail facilitate key signalling renewals over the coming years.

'The framework’s approach using fewer contractors will help bring them closer to Network Rail and the Routes/Regions and make further progress in working more collaboratively.'

The remaining two tiers, minor and major signalling, which complete the three-tier strategy for CP6 will be awarded in June 2019 and January 2020.

Kevin Robertshaw, programme director signalling, said: 'Our strategy for delivering signalling works in CP6 focuses on bringing the supplier closer to the client and facilitating a more integrated way of working.'
