Nation aims for zero waste

The Scottish Government has called for a united effort to achieve a zero waste society.

Speaking at a waste summit in Edinburgh last week, rural affairs and environment secretary, Richard Lochhead, said the nation must ‘work together to preserve the planet’s resources by stepping up our efforts to reduce waste and increase recycling’.

He pointed to latest figures from the Scottish Environment Protection Agency, which showed recycling rates improved 28.4% in Scotland in 2006/07, with the amount of waste going to landfill down 100,000t compared with the previous year.

‘But we must do more to tackle waste growth in our move towards a zero waste society,’ he said. ‘There will be prompt action on dealing with waste, but we need to have local authorities, the waste management community and the public on board.’
