N Ireland takes another step on roads to peace

Ministers have formally agreed to take on two new road projects in Northern Ireland, with the help of £400M from the republic.

At a historic meeting, which saw Martin McGuinness field questions alongside Rev Ian Paisley, the pair confirmed their backing for the cross-boarder Omagh to Donegal duel carriageway, and the Belfast to Larne duel carriageway. The Belfast to Larne road project will be taken forward by the Northern Ireland Executive and its agencies.

The Omagh to Donegal route will be taken forward in line with funding and accountability, planning, management and delivery arrangements agreed between the Irish Government and the Northern Ireland Executive. Mr Paisley also welcomed news that the Ulster Canal between Clones in the south and Upper Lough Erne is to be reopened, thanks to £30M from the Irish Government.
