Northern Ireland’s regional development minister, Conor Murphy, has pledged that transport plans and priorities will remain unchanged despite the economic crisis, and that infrastructure investment must continue to take full advantage of the upturn, when it comes.
Addressing the fourth all-Ireland infrastructure conference in Belfast, Murphy stressed the importance of the public and private sectors working together to develop infrastructure in all sectors.
‘It is not just banks and consumer confidence which need support,’ he said. ‘Transport is, after all, the backbone of the economy. Without efficient transport, the Irish economy, north and south, cannot function effectively. It is vital that we keep goods, commuters and customers moving.’
