Multimillion-pound upgrade proposal for A9

A £1.7bn transport strategy for the Highlands and Islands includes a £257M plan to dual much of the A9 between Inverness and Perth.
The Highlands and Islands Regional Transport Strategy (HiTrans) last week approved the 15-year strategy, which will be submitted to the Scottish Executive.
The strategy includes upgrading the A9 to dual carriageway for half the distance between Perth and Inverness by 2022, and a £200M project to dual the A06 from Inverness to Fochabers.
The short-term delivery plan covers 2008-2012, and bids for £350M of new investment for projects, including: £46M to improve connectivity to Caithness and Orkney; £71M on the Inverness to Aberdeen corridor; £60M for improved road maintenance; and £40M for improving public transport, tackling congestion, and encouraging active travel.
Charlie King, HiTrans chairman, said the proposals were ambitious, but absolutely necessary to improve Highlands transport, which was way behind that of the central belt.
‘I don’t think we’re being unrealistic. We’ve needed these improvements for a long time,’ he said.
‘The regional transport strategy was developed in consultation with local authorities, enterprise agencies, businesses, those who use the transport network and the general public, to reflect the investment the Highlands and Islands really need in our future transport network.’
The strategy will now be submitted to the Scottish Executive, with a response expected after the Holyrood elections in May.
