Motorists get first chance to slice through hamburger

Oxfordshire’s new ‘hamburger’ roundabout on the A40 near Headington has opened to motorists.
The system was designed to ease congestion on one of the county’s busiest and most accident-prone intersections, and is nicknamed hamburger because the A40 westbound slices through the centre of the existing roundabout. New traffic lights will manage queues on the approaches to the roundabout, and some of the extra capacity is being dedicated to bus priority.
Oxfordshire Highways is closely monitoring traffic flows, with the intention of making any necessary changes as quickly as possible.
Councillor David Robertson, the council’s cabinet member for transport, said: ‘The roundabout is a lynchpin of the traffic network in the Headington area, and we needed to have the job done.’
