More than a pinch of salt

Buckinghamshire County Council is salting 40% of its roads this year, up from 34%, thanks to an extra £100,000 included in the winter maintenance budget.

Highways officers have consulted parish, district and county councillors and listened to residents before deciding on which roads to salt.

Spreaders leaving the Amersham depot this year are now using Safecote, a conventional rocksalt with a molasses coating.
