More students drop out

Engineering students are dropping out of university courses at a higher rate than other subjects, a report has revealed.

According to a report by the Government’s committee of public affairs, the first-year continuation rate in engineering, maths and computing subjects is three percentage points below the national average for all subjects.

The report acknowledges such subjects are of ‘strategic importance to the nation’s economic development,’ and says universities need to ‘develop outreach programmes with schools for prospective students so they are encouraged to apply and more likely, succeed’.
