More muscle for mayor as Act gets Royal Ascent

The mayor of London has new powers over housing, planning and waste, after the Greater London Authority (GLA) Bill received Royal Ascent.

Under the provisions of the GLA Act 2007, Ken Livingstone will be able to determine planning applications of strategic importance, and have a duty to address climate change, as well as publish a London climate change mitigation and energy strategy.

The Act also allows the establishment of a London Waste and Recycling Board to promote recycling and reuse of waste.

Commenting on the mayor’s new powers, London Councils chairman, Councillor Merrick Cockell, said: ‘It is vital that the mayor does not abuse his new powers or seek to micro-manage those boroughs on planning issues that he disagrees with. ‘The boroughs know what works for their local communities and have a democratic mandate from them. He must not dismiss them because their views are not in line with his one-size fits all approach.’
