More hurdles to come as Derby progress is stalled

A High Court challenge, which was holding up completion of Derby’s inner-ring road, has been dropped after a decision by transport secretary, Ruth Kelly.

Resident Richard Butler was campaigning against the construction of the Connecting Derby project, as he feared it would engulf part of his garden. But in December, Kelly ruled that the Five Lamps junction section of the work, which covers the area where Mr Butler lives, should not go ahead.

He dropped his court action after discussions with Derby City Council to make sure it would not appeal Kelly’s decision.

Unfortunately for the council, there is still one more barrier in its way after residents applied for a piece of land, which the scheme needs to cross, to be declared village green. If awarded, the council would then have to go through a process of removing village green status and find a similar piece of land to compensate.
