More Richmond residents book a place among car club set

More than 700 residents have joined car clubs in Richmond upon Thames since January.

The number of members of the London borough’s three car clubs rose by 74% to 1,734 in the six months to June. The council said the increasing numbers vindicated its decision to increase the number of on-street ‘car club-only’ parking spaces this year – the number of on-street spaces has increased from six to 73 since January.

The new figures show the council’s Smarter Travel programme is more than halfway towards reaching its target of 1,250 extra members by 2011.

Streetcar, the most popular of the three clubs operating in the borough, has recorded figures showing that during June, its vehicles were used for 95% of the time they were available.
