Mobile technology signals a warning for others

Variable-message signs mounted on Land Rovers are to be used to warn oncoming drivers of accidents on trunk roads in Devon and Cornwall.
AccordMP is trialling the LED display unit, mounted on the roof of a Freelander vehicle, and the managing agent contractor will deploy a fleet on the Highways Agency's Area 1 MAC contract. Designed and produced by Lux Traffic Controls, the first vehicle was on display at the SED site equipment show at Rockingham last week.
AccordMP says the vehicles will be able to reach emergency locations quickly and in all weather conditions, and provide accurate information so that drivers slow down and traffic keeps moving. Display messages can be programmed in advance, by a hand-held device, or transmitted remotely.
The system was easy to use and installation costs were kept to a minimum because the unit is simply fixed to a commercially-available roof rack.
