Ministers weigh up options - and Galileo is the winner

The Government has offered its continuing support for the Galileo satellite navigation system, despite serious concerns raised by the transport select committee.

In its response to the committee’s report on Galileo, the Government said its continuing support for the project was justified by ‘the clear direct benefits to the UK’. However, it said it shared the committee’s concerns over the risk of cost escalation in the remaining stages of the project.

‘If Galileo is to offer value for money for the community, it is essential that costs are kept under control and a full operational capability is delivered within the budget,’ it said. It also said its support depended on the mechanisms and necessary skills being in place, together with an open, competitive procurement process.
