Ministers seek European aid following UK floods

The Government has confirmed it is to apply for support from the European Union Solidarity Fund to help recovery from recent flooding.

A successful application depends on the total amount of damage caused by a natural disaster to exceed £2.2bn. If approved, the Government expects the resources to be available within nine to 12 months.

The aim of the EUSF is to help member states meet the uninsurable costs of natural disasters, including the costs of emergency services and putting infrastructure back into working order.

Flood recovery minister, John Healey, said the Government would put together the strongest case possible for additional funding. ‘As part of this, we are continuing to carry out assessments of costs with those areas affected by the June floods, and stand ready to do the same with areas hit by the more recent floods,’ he added.
