Minister’s road safety tips

 
‘Simple changes’ to road design and layout could dramatically improve road casualty statistics, road safety minister, Paul Clark, said this week.


He told Surveyor he was expecting useful ideas to emerge from the Department for Transport’s rural demonstration projects programme, which runs until March 2010. One potential solution involves an over-sized traffic island designed to physically deter traffic from speeding into a Northamptonshire village.


Clark praised new average speed cameras as being ‘very effective’ in reducing serious accidents by 15%. Local authorities will receive fresh guidance on defining correct speeds and limits, he said.
