Ministerial backing for Tees Valley Light Railway welcomed

The new minister for the Northeast has pledged his support for the proposed Tees Valley Light Railway.

Speaking at the North East Economic Forum in Middlesbrough, Newcastle MP, Nick Brown, said he was confident championing the proposals and making a case to the Treasury. Tees Valley Regeneration is taking the lead role in proposals for the light railway between Darlington and Saltburn.

The business case for the suggested transport system went to the Government at the end of last year – and the proposals have now been sent to local authorities and the Tyne and Wear Passenger Transport Authority for consultation and approval. Brown said there was considerable goodwill towards the project, which would be based on existing rail networks, and the funding gap was not ‘unbridgeable’.

Welcoming the minister’s comments, a spokesperson for Tees Valley Regeneration said there were several funding options for the light rail system. These would be considered once consultation with stakeholders had ended and an agreement on the proposals had been reached.
