Minister says tolls on Dartford Crossing may be scrapped

The Government has raised the possibility of scrapping tolls on the Dartford Crossing.

Transport minister, Sadiq Khan, said one-way charging was one of two options being considered, to help traffic flow and improve safety.

In a letter to Honrchurch MP, James Brokenshire, he said the other option would involve changing the toll layout and introducing new technology.

Essex CC has been campaigning for the scrapping of the Dartford tolls since the tunnels and bridge recouped their building costs more than five years ago.

Lord Hanningfield, leader of Essex CC, said: ‘We are pleased that the Government has acknowledged that scrapping the tolls is a possibility.

‘When we built the tunnels more than 30 years ago, there was a proviso that the crossing should be self-funding, and so we have to ask ourselves why, 30 years and millions of pounds of additional toll contributions later, we are still paying the price.’
