Minister rules public inquiry for Westbury bypass

The £33.1M Westbury bypass scheme is to be subjected to a planning inquiry, the secretary of state for communities has announced.

The Wiltshire County Council scheme has been in the pipeline for 20 years, and was granted conditional planning permission in May. But Hazel Blears has now said the plans are to be subject to a full planning inquiry.

Blears wants the independent inquiry to hear the full range of evidence, from the concerns of parish councils to those of environmental experts, before reaching a conclusion.

She called for the inquiry, ‘because it may conflict with national policies on important matters.’

Parvis Khansari, assistant director for major projects at Wiltshire, said: ‘We are confident the planning inspector who will oversee the inquiry will see the clear merits of this scheme, which will reduce the number of vehicles travelling through the centre of Westbury, and deliver real improvements to the road network in west Wiltshire.’

The scheme has met with local resistance on both environmental and transport issues. If it gets the go ahead, work is expected to start in 2009 on the government-funded scheme, which includes £1.3M worth of improvements for Westbury town centre. The A350 bypass is 4.2km, and the Glenmore Link from the West Wilts Trading Estate is a further 1.2km. There are also alignment improvements of 0.55km and 0.4km, respectively.
