The Government has opted not to increase the Humber Bridge tolls. Transport minister, Sadiq Khan, rejected an application from the Humber Bridge Board to increase tolls from £2.70 to £2.90 for cars. He has opted to keep the tolls at their current levels, in light of the recession.
‘I do not believe it is the right time for the Humber Bridge tolls to be raised in the current economic climate, and so, after careful consideration, I have decided not to accept the proposed increases.’
The Government has also been urged to rethink tolls on the Severn Bridge. Ian Gallagher of the Freight Transport Association (FTA) said: ‘The cripplingly-high cost of using the Severn Bridge is a huge detriment to businesses in South Wales and western England.’
The FTA has proposed amending the current contract with the bridge’s builder, Severn River Crossing, to reduce the level of tolls but to levy them over a longer period of time.
