Minister makes fare point

The £212M government funding for local authorities to cover the cost of the national bus concession was based on assumptions including visitor hotspots, Rosie Winterton told Parliament last week.

The local transport minister confirmed funding would be distributed by a non ring-fenced special grant via a formula. She said the Department for Transport was awaiting the result of a consultation which included different options for distributing the funding, ‘taking account of likely cost drivers, including eligible residents and visitors’.

Local authorities would also benefit from around £30M for the issuing of the national pass. Winterton was responding to a question from the transport select committee on whether the scheme would reflect the number of qualifying residents and visitors to an area.
