Met Office’s latest prediction advice will go down a storm

The Met Office says it is able to provide more precise pinpointing of where and when extreme rainfall will occur, strengthening the UK’s resilience to major weather events.

The advances mean rainfall forecasts will now be available a further day in advance, and the location of storms forecast with more precision.

The developments include: Short Term Ensemble Prediction System (STEPS), which models radar data to provide predictions of surface rainfall; Met Office Global and Regional Ensemble Prediction System (MOGRPEPS), which creates multiple forecasts up to two days ahead to quantify uncertainty; and Storm Scale Model, a computer model that allows the evolution of convective rainstorms to be forecast.
