Mersey Gateway plans go out for consultation

Proposals for the long-awaited £390M Mersey Gateway project have gone out to public consultation.
The project will include a dual three-lane, tolled crossing, which will link the existing Central Expressway in Runcorn to the Eastern Bypass in Widness, before ultimately connecting with the Speke Road towards Liverpool.
The 1.3km bridge will provide relief to the existing Silver Jubilee Bridge, which carries ten times the number of vehicles it was designed for, at 30M a year.
Halton Borough Council is also seeking feedback on how to modify the Silver Jubilee Bridge to benefit local people. This bridge will also be tolled, except for buses, cyclists and pedestrians.
If approved, work on the Mersey Gateway is due to begin in 2011, with the opening set for 2014.
