Members back £85M ring road for Inverness

Highland councillors have backed an £85M project to build a tunnel under the Caledonian Canal, and a bridge over the River Ness, as part of a proposed new ring road for Inverness.

The council has agreed to submit the road project to the Scottish Government, after unanimously agreeing the preferred road line for the eastern section. However, there was debate over the preferred line for the western section, with the council voting 41 to 21 in favour of the costlier bridge/ tunnel option.

Transport officials had proposed construction of a bridge over the River Ness and a high level opening bridge over the Caledonian Canal, at a cost of £50M.

Convener Councillor Sandy Park said: ‘While there was division over the western link, we have reached a decision and the most important thing is that everyone recognises the need for investment in a trunk link road.’
