Mayor drives ahead with plans for bus apprenticeships

Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, has revealed plans to make 400 new bus driver apprenticeships available every year in the capital.

The agreement, between Transport for London and bus company First Group, will provide new bus drivers with the opportunity to develop additional skills, as well as work towards recognised qualifications.

The mayor also announced that the firm behind the London cycle hire scheme, Serco, was looking at ways to offer apprenticeships as part of the 140 jobs to be created by the venture.

Mr Johnson also praised TfL contractors for creating further apprenticeship opportunities in highways teams.

‘Young apprentices are key to the future prosperity of London and it is essential that we continue to build a skilled workforce to maintain the competitiveness of our great city.

‘That means companies and businesses in all sectors of our economy must play their part – by investing in young people who are keen to learn new skills and will add real value to any workforce,’ said Mr Johnson.
