Massive drive launched to clean up Peterborough

Street signs in Peterborough are to be cleaned or replaced as part of a £160,000 ‘spring clean’ launched by the city council this week.
A council team will also be out and about sweeping the streets, picking up litter, removing graffiti and dealing with fly-tipping.
John Peach, leader of Peterborough City Council, said: ‘Residents told us they wanted to see a cleaner city, and this is what we plan to give them. Road signs will be repaired or replaced and roads will be swept more often. Underpasses will be cleared of graffiti, and lighting will be improved, while open spaces will be kept tidy, with new bins and benches replaced, where necessary.’
He said the scheme – which is additional to the work undertaken by the council’s street cleansing team – would be particularly focused on Peterborough’s urban areas, including Bretton, New England and Millfield.
It follows the recent announcement that environmental wardens with the power to issue on-the-spot fines to anyone caught dropping litter, fly-tipping or scrawling graffiti on walls have started patrolling the streets. These schemes complement the ongoing litter campaign which uses CCTV cameras to capture incidents of alleged littering.
