Market forces offer big repair savings

Somerset CC claims it will save around £25m from a new five-year highways maintenance contract with Atkins, because of current market conditions.

The £200m contract will fast track 20% of road repairs and impose stronger financial penalties for poor performance and over-running deadlines.

The council said the savings, estimated at £5m a year, arose from the ‘competitive prices available in the civil engineering works market at present’.

Anthony Trollope-Bellew, Somerset’s cabinet member for environment, said: ‘This is one of the biggest contracts the council has entered into recently, and we wanted to make sure we obtained best value. Highways is a priority and with strict terms within the contract, we can make sure work is carried out to a high standard.’
