Manufacturers dismiss 15% drop in sales of ‘gas-guzzling’ 4x4s

A 15% fall in the sales of ‘Chelsea tractors’ this year does not mean 4X4s are on the way out, according to Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.
A spokesman for the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders said the fall, which last month was 3.1% down on the same time last year, was due to model changes, and was ‘expected’. He said: ‘They are down, but that always happens at the point where major manufactures, such as Land Rover, are changing models. I would expect it to level out next year.’
However, the SMMT’s own figures show market for these vehicles has been in decline since 1997, revealing a rise in ownership of less-polluting cars, while ownership of band G vehicles declines overall.
Ken Livingstone, who plans to charge band G cars £25 to drive in central London, welcomed the news, saying people had to be told how bad for the environment these vehicles were.
