Managing traffic is an Olympian task

Managing transport for the 2012 Olympic Games is the biggest challenge of its kind since the Second World War, according to the Olympic Development Authority (ODA).

Outlining requirements for an effective network during the games, Hugh Sumner, director of transport at the ODA, said working groups were under way to ‘heavily improve’ the road network.

Mr Sumner was keen to stress the importance of transport hubs, where capacity could be improved – such as Stanmore station, where car parking is extensive – but didn’t commit to specific work.

He concluded: ‘We will judiciously and proportionally use transport compared with other Games. Transport doesn’t get any tougher than this.’
