Makeover for key Brighton gateway

Brighton & Hove City Council has unveiled plans for an eco-makeover of the London Road area of the city.

A council report said the local authority’s vision was to transform the city’s key gateway into ‘a network of attractive avenues, streets and lanes’, by improving its appearance, sustainability and traffic flow.

The plan calls for measures to cut air pollution, improve open spaces and de-clutter streets. Streetscenes could also be made more attractive, while routes between key destinations and the station improved.

Cabinet member for environment, Geoffrey Theobald, said: ‘This is an important gateway. It could and should be so much nicer. We need to bring in measures which ensure traffic keeps flowing, people can get about feeling safe, and that many streets are made much tidier and more welcoming.’
