Make rapid use of private sector for BRTs say experts

Local authorities have been urged to engage the private sector early in the development of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) projects.

A review of BRT projects by 4ps, local government’s project delivery specialist, called for greater use of early operator involvement as a tool to improve private sector input in relation to alignment and route planning.

Projects which have achieved most patronage and modal transfer are those which access major housing areas and link them to key destinations, such as universities and city centres.

‘The development of the route is, therefore, essential, and it would appear logical that in order to develop the most commercially- viable scheme, early operator involvement should be utilised.’

The review also advises local transport authorities to have a sufficient understanding of the private sector’s commercial drivers and requirements, if they are to maximise private sector contributions to the funding of infrastructure and vehicles.
