‘Make freight a big issue’ in Euro poll

Freight on Rail has called on MEP candidates in next month’s European elections to oppose the introduction of so-called ‘mega trucks’ on to the continent’s roads.

Campaigner Philippa Edmunds claims ‘fundamental mathematical errors’ on behalf of the European Commission-sponsored research into the longer, heavier vehicles (LHVs) undermines their case.

‘We are shocked EC officials have published inaccurate research on such an important policy,’ she said. Last year, the-then transport secretary, Ruth Kelly, announced that proposals to introduce LHVs on to UK roads had been rejected by the Government (Surveyor, 5 June 2008).

The Department for Transport’s research found the vehicles would create serious implications for the management of junctions, as well as an increase in carbon emissions by shifting goods from rail to road.
