Maidstone taps into computer innovation

Maidstone is to be equipped with a computerised Urban Traffic Control System as part of a drive to cut congestion in the town by 10%.
Unveiled this week, the system consists of two giant flat screens tracking traffic movements and identifying congestion hotspots. The screens will be linked to a computer-based system which will log traffic, alter traffic light timings and give advance travel information online. When the system goes fully operational next spring, interactive signs telling drivers which hotspots to avoid will be erected by Maidstone’s main roads.
Kent County Council leader, Paul Carter, said: ‘We want to keep traffic moving, especially in our town centres. Maidstone is the first in the county to have this hi-tech revolution for tackling congestion.’
The council is also setting up a team of ‘jambusters’ so its highways inspectors can work closer with the police when congestion is caused by crashes.
