MPs give Nottingham trams credit with £437M

The Government has granted initial approval of plans to extend Nottingham’s tram network, and said it will contribute £437M in PFI credits to the scheme.
Plans for Nottingham Express Network (NET) phase two would see the network extended to the south and west of the city, doubling the number of stops and the size of the existing tram.
Wednesday’s decision will allow Nottingham’s city and county councils – which will contribute £141M – to undertake detailed design of the scheme and apply for statutory powers.
Construction of the extensions could start by late 2009, with trams running around three years later, providing the scheme is granted Transport and Works Act (TWA) powers and conditional approval – which would then trigger the procurement process.
Welcoming the announcement, Councillor John Taylor, chair of the NET Development Board, said he was ‘thrilled’ the Government had endorsed the case for an extension and backed it up with funding.
The two extensions are planned to go to Chilwell/Beeston and Clifton.
