MPs fraught with fears over freight strategy

The Government must urgently renew its freight transport strategy and be more proactive in addressing the issues surrounding the sector, MPs have warned.

The transport select committee slammed the Government for its attitude to freight transport, which is characterised by ‘an apparent recognition of the issues, but an unwillingness or an inability to address them’.

It was not acceptable that the market would provide all the solutions, the committee warned. ‘It is now urgent for the Government to produce an environmentally-aware and business-friendly freight strategy which assists the national and regional economies.’

The committee called for the relaxation of blanket delivery bans to be seriously considered, where appropriate, given best practice and an ‘increasing imperative’ to reduce peak congestion in urban areas.

‘We are concerned that instances where local agreements have been successfully negotiated are still rare and progress towards wider adoption of noise restrictions, rather than delivery bans, appears to be slow,’ it said. The Government should also ‘discuss a way forward’ with regard to lorry road user charging.
