Highways spending in Kirklees is to take a hit, after the council voted to more than halve its capital spending over the next seven years.
Kirklees MBC’s updated investment plan will see spending on highways drop from £27.6m this year, to £15.4m by 2012, until the end of the seven-year period. Total capital spending will drop from £194m this year to £88m by 2015/16. Spending on public sector housing will be cut from £25m a year to £17.5m.
The council said strategic priority roads would receive a higher proportion of resources.
Council leader, Mehboob Khan, said: ‘We have put together carefully-crafted proposals which allow us to address our key priorities while recognising the current economic climate is likely to lead to reduced income in terms of government grant and return on investments.
‘We have been careful to recognise what level of debt and borrowing is desirable for the council.’
