M6 extension gets go ahead

Roads minister Dr Stephen Ladyman gave the £175M extension of the M6 from Carlisle to Scotland the planning go-ahead last week. Just over nine kilometres of the existing A74 will be upgraded to motorway standard from the end of the M6 at junction 44 to the start of the A74 at Guards Mill, just south of the Scottish border at Gretna.

Ladyman, accepting a planning inspector’s recommendation, said the scheme was the ‘missing link’ in the motorway network between London and Glasgow.
