Lucky 13 are planning a great career

The first 13 candidates have qualified as transport planning professionals, after satisfying the requirements of the new qualification aimed at providing transport planners with increased professional recognition.

The qualification, launched by the Institution of Highways & Transportation and Transport Planning Society in March, was designed to recognise transport planners in the same light as chartered engineers (CEng) and members of bodies such as the Royal Town Planning Institute.

A total of 22 candidates participated in the first pilot round, having their professional review interviews in June, which were conducted by teams of experienced CEng and transport planning reviewers. While almost all of those candidates who were not successful lacked the required breadth of experience and proficiency, they had the potential to satisfy the requirements with further experience, according to the IHT. It said the award of the TPP qualification to each person ‘marks an enormously-important step in establishing transport planning as a profession’.

Keith Mitchell, chair of the TPP professional standards committee and past TPS chair, said: ‘We believe the TPP qualification will strengthen our profession, and help attract the high-quality entrants we need to meet the UK’s considerable transport challenges.’

Sue Stevens, the IHT’s director of education, said it had ‘considerable interest in the TPP generally’ and already had a number of candidates for the next assessments in December.

‘I’m receiving inquiries on a daily basis and anticipate a group of between 30 and 40 in December,’ she told Surveyor. Candidates need to submit their Portfolio of Evidence for the December round by 7 November.
