Low voltage traffic lights signal change for Essex

Essex County Council is to test extra low voltage traffic lights, saving 60% on the energy costs of traditional lights.

ELV traffic lights contain advanced microprocessors and only became available late last year.

Cllr Norman Hume, cabinet member for highways and transportation, said: ‘The power requirements of modern signals continue to fall, offering us a great opportunity to reduce both our energy costs and our carbon footprint. LED signals we’re using now last longer and need less routine maintenance or replacement, making them better value for money and reducing our carbon footprint, and with less maintenance visits required.’

The Norsey Road junction in Billericay is the first to be installed in Essex, and will be used as a trial. Several local authorities had trialled ELV traffic lights, but none had rolled them out permanently, according to Dave Coatham, technical services manager at the Institution of Lighting Engineers.
