Losers vow to press ahead despite ‘snub’ on travel schemes

Authorities left out in the cold after being snubbed for Transport Innovation Fund cash have vowed to press ahead with schemes.
Among the losers West Sussex County Council has vowed to continue developing plans for a new fast and frequent bus network along the coast from Portsmouth to Brighton despite the setback at the hands of the Department for Transport.
The county is reeling from the news the Government will not finance a study into whether a congestion charge based in part on the centre of Chichester would be feasible. Despite the decision, Lieutenant Colonel Tex Pemberton, cabinet member for highways and transport, said the coastal expressway plan is ‘far from dead’.
He said: ‘This scheme is still being recommended by the Regional Transport Board for funding from 2013.’
