Environment minister, Ben Bradshaw, has officially opened Frog Island waste facility, marking a major stepping stone in London’s borough-led campaign to improve recycling rates in the capital.
The Frog Island waste facility will be operated by Shanks Waste Solutions on behalf of the East London Waste Authority (ELWA), which is responsible for waste disposal in the boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Havering, Newham and Redbridge.
The plant is a key part of EWLA’s 25-year, integrated waste management contract with the boroughs, which will invest a total of £100m in waste facilities.
EWLA has set a target of recycling 33% of the 535,000t of waste collected in the four boroughs by 2016.
