London’s new low-emission zone will be a breath of fresh air

The London low-emission zone (LEZ), which aims to reduce harmful emissions from the most polluting diesel-engined lorries, coaches, and buses, comes into effect on 4 February across most of Greater London.

The LEZ will initially apply to lorries above 12t, but will extend to vehicles heavier than 3.5t later in the year. Drivers of affected vehicles which do not comply with LEZ standards will be fined £200.

The London LEZ is the largest in the world, but more than 50 other LEZs are in operation across Europe, including 22 in Germany alone.

Philip Mulligan, chief executive of Environmental Protection UK, welcomed the move, but warned: ‘This step alone will not allow London to meet the UK’s health-based air quality objectives, and we urge further action by all levels of government in London, to ensure that the city can enjoy clean air.’
