Londoners given say in transport allocation

Haringey Council has launched a consultation scheme to give residents a direct say on how the London borough allocates transport spending.

The ‘On the Road to Improvement’ consultation asks residents to choose three transport areas they think should be prioritised for future investment. The most popular three choices will be made priorities when Haringey allocates its highways improvement fund for 2008-09, and bids for funding from Transport for London, to be spent in 2009-10.

Residents can choose from 14 different areas, including road resurfacing, pothole repairs, road safety improvements, traffic calming, footway replacement, cycling pathways, measures to ease bus route congestion, and improved streetlighting.

Cllr Brian Haley, cabinet member for environment and conservation, said: ‘At Haringey, we take the view that if you genuinely want to improve your services, then you consult with and listen to the people who use your services. This applies to highways improvements as much as any other area of the council’s work.’

Haringey was named the Most Improved Transport Borough in London at the recent London Transport Awards. Communities minister, Hazel Blears, last week set out plans for every neighbourhood to have control of a ‘community kitty’ within five years (Surveyor, 12 July).
