London throws down gauntlet

London boroughs will be able to issue fines of £100 to drivers caught throwing litter from motor vehicles.

The penalties were agreed this week by London Councils’ transport and environment committee (TEC), following a capital-wide consultation with residents and boroughs.

The new powers, awarded under the London Local Authorities Act 2007, must be ratified by the secretary of state before being put into action.

TEC has set the penalty charge level at £100 – although with a 40% discount for early payment.

Charges and fines have also been agreed for failing to comply with regulations at local authority run civic amenity sites and for failing to keep waste appropriately stored and off footways before collections.
