London must adopt surburban outlook

Investment is needed in order to unlock the potential of London suburbs to ensure the capital remains more competitive for the future, according to London Councils.

A new report – entitled Successful suburbs: The case for investment in London’s suburban communities – claims suburbs are vital contributors to the city’s economic, social and environmental performance, and are currently facing significant challenges in these areas.

The report has called on the mayor to follow up commitments made in statements around the forthcoming ‘Transport strategy’ with investment. It outlined an improved orbital public transport in outer London and improved public transport interchanges as key priorities.

It also insisted that environmental sustainability needs should be integral to any investment plans for the suburbs.
